  • The terraces face southwest in order to ensure the longest possible exposure of the grapes to light and heat of the sun. In this way, the grapes reach maturity under a balanced temperature regime. In summer, the grapes are free from combustion of flavors, and in winter, they are protected from frost;
  • The area’s weather conditions are exceptional. The frost-free period exceeds 180 days, and the sum of active temperatures (above the threshold of 10°С) exceeds 3.200°С. This helps to build up the amount of heat required during the growing period;
  • The plantations have a density of 2800-3100 vines per hectare and the grapes are grown in areas with the most suitable soils for each variety;
  • The soils are heterogeneous, with beneficial structures for different types of grapes planted in the winery’s vineyards. The soils include carbonated, typical or levigated chernozems, low or medium weathered, with high or moderate fertility, clay – or limestone-textured, depending on each area;
  • The average annual rainfall does not exceed 450 mm, so the vineyards are not affected by the excess of moisture.

Gitana Vineyards are located in the area of two villages in Leova district, being divided into three areas. One area is in Filipeni village and the other two in Romanovca village. These areas are favorable for vine growing, meeting all soil and weather conditions required to produce high quality wine:

  • The winery’s plantations are located on the territory of Sarata’s steppe depression, in a green environment with a beautiful scenery, near the “Codri Tigheciului” forest, at about 100 km distance from the Black Sea;
  • The vineyards are located on hills with descending slopes, at an altitude of 150-200 meters above the sea;

All these soil and weather factors create an ideal microclimate for the growth of healthy grapes that provide the tastes and flavors specific for Gitana wines only.

Filipeni, a plantation of noble Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties was established in 2004.This area is very favorable for the development of red varieties, due to northeast exposure of slopes and thanks to the very fertile soil. These two factors contribute decisively to accumulation of the optimal amount of sugars, perfect development of flavors and balancing of the acidity in grapes.
